Alan, Sharon, Sydney, and Jessica Moore's MacGregor 26X Galley Modifications

Here's what I started with. The lower cabinet door just opened into the bilge... not much good for storage!

We put in a laminate counter top, with a new sink and propane stove, built a box for the cabinets, and built a dish rack. I also added a 26 gallon fresh water tank with a pump. The faucet has a pull out spray head with an adjustable nozzle. Thanks to Duane for the drawer/cabinet pulls (we have 60 left)! Sharon pointed out I probably should have removed the "Wal-Mart" trash sack before taking pictures but I thought that would make it more familiar to her.

I found the propane stove online - most of them were pretty expensive but this one was more reasonably priced - $134 from pplmotorhomes.com. I just have it plumbed in to use one of those 16 oz disposable bottles; the bottle sits in the cabinet out of sight. The theory is that the bottle should be disconnected and put in the cockpit when not in use. I'm going to get a propane detector for the bilge though. Some people have run the propane line to the back of the boat and used a big bottle, but I didn't put that much work into it (yet).

The wood obviously isn't teak - most of it is red oak from the farm in Missouri. I found the cabinet doors at Icki's in Montpelier, IN for $2 each. I routed the drawer fronts to match the cabinet doors. I thought we found the sink online - it's a bar sink, but I can't find where I bought it. It's possible we found it at Menards. The faucet is from Lowes.

The drawers slides are the type that hold the drawer closed until you pull harder on them. We couldn't find them at Lowes or Menards, but Gillman Lumber had them. Gillman also got me magnet-activated latches that are meant to be child safety latches to hold the cabinet doors closed. The can be set unlatched so if you are working there you don't need the magnet each time you want to get into the cabinet.

It isn't shown, but the bottom of the sink extends down into the cabinet area, so I had to cut out the upper right hand corner of the cabinet box to allow it to slide in around the sink. There was just enough clearance to slide the cabinet in with the cabinet front on it as one piece. I screwed blocks into the cabinet walls behind the face to hold the cabinet in place. The dish rack is screwed to the counter top with angle brackets.
